Pilonidal Cyst

Pilonidal Cyst

Pilonidal cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop near the tailbone at the top of the buttocks. They occur when hair follicles become blocked and infected, leading to the formation of a cyst. Pilonidal cysts are more common in young adults and can cause symptoms such as pain, swelling, redness, and drainage of pus or blood. The exact cause of pilonidal cysts is not clear, but factors such as excess hair, friction or pressure in the affected area, and poor hygiene may contribute to their development.

If you suspect you have a pilonidal cyst, it is important to seek medical attention. Your doctor will examine the affected area and may order imaging tests such as an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment may involve draining or excising the cyst. After the cyst is drained or removed, proper wound care and hygiene are essential to prevent recurrence. This may involve keeping the area clean, using warm compresses, and avoiding activities that can irritate the area, such as sitting for long periods or wearing tight clothing. In some instances, additional preventive measures, such as hair removal, may be recommended to reduce the risk of recurrence.
